For years the Miller family has helped make the lacrosse program in William Floyd mean something. From Andrew setting records and attending Johns Hopkins to Matt winning the Enners Award in 2002 and helping the Colonials to their first playoff birth in school history, not to mention winning national titles at New York Tech and now coaching at the high school, the name Miller and lacrosse is synonymous in Mastic and Shirley.

This year they added another notch to their lacrosse belt when their younger brother Luke won the 2011 Ray Enners Award as the top player in Suffolk County.

"I really can't put it into words," said Luke, who was a six-year varsity player for Floyd. "It' s a prestigious award. Just to have my name mentioned with the other guys is an amazing feeling. I’ m honored to have won it."

Miller said he leads by example and feels his character is a major reason for him winning the honor. Since William Floyd graduated 18 seniors from the 2010 roster, Miller was the main leader left for what proved to be a daunting 2011 season. Floyd finished 3-13 overall.

Both on the field and in the locker room Miller was there for the players making their varsity debuts. He assisted on eight of his teammates first varsity goals.

Later in the season he battled through a hamstring injury and spent much of the year hobbled, but managed to stay on the field.

Miller, who was an integral part of Floyd’ s football team the last two years, winning consecutive Suffolk County titles, will play Division I lacrosse at Stony Brook. He was also recruited by Loyola, New York Tech, Notre Dame, Cornell and Hopkins.

"He was an All-American type player," said Floyd coach Desmond Magna. " I really wanted him to walk out of his senior year having won something significant. This award is not all about just playing, but all of these other things that he did."

Miller finished his career with 117 goals and 99 assists and tied a school record when he scored seven goals in a game twice in 2011.

"His strongest attribute is his strength," Magna said. " He' s the type of kid you don' t realize how strong he is until you play against him. His overall strength is what sets him apart."

Other 2011 nominees for the Enners Award include Smithtown West' s Kyle Keenan, Sachem' s Michael Andreassi and Allen Henderson from Eastport-South Manor.
